Description

Virtual Villagers: The Lost Children continues the storyline from Virtual Villagers: A New Home. After living on the island for several months, two villagers venture into a mysterious unexplored cave. They slip on some rocks into an underground river and are swept down a waterfall onto the west side of the island where they encounter the island's native population. All of the native adults are missing, however, leaving the two adult villagers to tend to the children as well as they can.

Game play mechanics are similar to Virtual Villagers: A New Home, with variations relevant to the storyline of this chapter. The little villagers still need to acquire technologies and skills, but several technologies like engineering, exploration, and culture have replaced construction, fertility and spirituality, and the skill of parenting has replaced breeding. There are 16 new puzzles to solve and items (shells, bugs, butterflies, pebbles) for the children to collect. In addition, players can change the clothing of their virtual villagers.

The simulation still progresses in real time even when the game is not running. Villagers can die due to lack of food or neglect unless the game is paused before ending a session. Once there are no more living villagers, the game is over.
