[edit] Description

The Diane Game is always on. There are no timeouts, freebies, home-free zones.

[edit] How To Play:

Players join the game through voluntary involvement or by breaching rule X.

A new game begins each day (midnight). Players must avoid using the other players' names when speaking to them directly. First names, Nick names, and Last names are all fair game. Any name commonly used for that person counts. Intentional malapropism or alteration of names is the same as using a name correctly.

Once a player has been called by his name, the opportunity to score becomes available. To do so, the player must respond in conversation by calling the offending player "Diane". That player is now known as "Diane" for the remainder of the day. Other players may now freely refer to each other using their names, with the exception of "Diane". Calling "Diane" by his/her real name is known as a Fumble.

A fumble can only be recovered by "Diane" or the player who fumbled. "Diane" may recover the fumble by calling the player who fumbled "Diane". This player is now known as "Diane" until another player fumbles or the day ends. The player who fumbles can recover the fumble by correcting him/herself and calling "Diane" by the name "Diane", but must do so before being called "Diane".

Basic Rules & Examples:
Scenario One: Basic Play and Engagement
Player 1 (Steve) and Player 2 (Jim) are talking:
P1: "Hey there Jim, How's it going?"
P2: "Fine, Diane"
Judgement: Player 1 is now Diane.

Scenario Two: Missed Opportunity to Score
Player 1 (Steve) and Player 2 (Jim) are talking:
P1: "Hey there Jim, How's it going?"
P2: "Fine, and you?" followed by appropriate pause
Judgement: No penalty awarded. Both players are safe.

Scenario Three: Bullshit and Trickery!
Player 1 (Steve) and Player 2 (Jim) are talking:
P2: "What up, tevie!" (intentional malapropism or alteration of name)
P1: "Nothing, Diane"
Judgement: Player 2 is now Diane. There's no room in the Diane game for bullshit or trickery.

Players may reverse "the Diane" through a fumble. This is accomplished if another player in the game accidentally refers to Diane by his/her real name. Fumbles can be recovered.

Scenario Four: Fumble. Opponent recovers
Player 1 (Diane/Steve) and Player 2 (Jim) are talking:
P2: "Hey Steve, can you pass me that stapler?"
P1: "Sure Thing, Diane!"
Judgement: Player 2 fumbled, is now Diane and Steve has restored his dignity.

Scenario Five: Fumble. Recovered
Player 1 (Diane/Steve) and Player 2 (Jim) are talking:
P2: "Hey Steve, - oh, crap, I mean Diane.. can you pass me that stapler?"
Judgement: Player 2 recovered the fumble.

Rule 1:
You do not have to tell all players involved who has been assigned the name Diane, but there is nothing preventing you from doing so.
Rule 2:
The game must be played vocally. Preferably face-to-face, but over the phone can be done if necessary.
Rule 3:
If you are named Diane, you may not play the game. No amendments can be made to accomodate you. This isn't your game. Deal.
Rule 4:
Once you opt in to the game, you may not stop playing.
Rule 5:
Any reference that is a specific permutation of the opponent's name is counted. This includes (but is not limited to): abbreviations, last names, nicknames, spoonerisms, malapropisms..etc.

  • Note it must be a SPECIFIC permutation. "Hey You" is safe. "Hey Diamond Diggity Dave" - Opening to score.

Rule 6a:
The Diane may not bluff about his/her identity. The 'Diane' does not have to self-identify as Diane, but may not lie or hide his/her 'Diane'-ness
Rule 6b:
Nobody can lie about the identity of the 'Diane' in an attempt to trick someone to say their own name. This is poor form.
Rule X:
People who are not involved in the game get ONE and only one taunt. This means that outsiders may refer to "The Diane" as Diane. They will, at this point receive a warning explaining that this is their one chance to refer to "The Diane" as such. A second taunt after this warning is considered binding acknowledgement that the taunter is now in the Diane Game. They can not opt out. See Rule 4.

[edit] FAQ:

1) If a woman is playing, does she get a man's name?
- What is a woman doing cavorting with men outside of the kitchen? No. In all seriousness, this is an equal opportunity game. Women are also referred to as Diane. Case Closed.
2) What if you're playing with people in different time zones?
- Then make local friends, you social deficient. Or split the difference between timezones. Still though, make real friends..
3) Can't I just go around and call everyone Diane?
- You could.. If you were a total pussy. That is SO not the spirit of the game. Grow up.
4) How do I 'win' the Diane game?
- You don't. The Diane game is serious business. There are no winners. Only losers, Diane.
5) Why did you pick the name Diane?
- Do you have to question every-damn-thing? Can you just have fun blindly? What is wrong with you?.
6) Who maintains the rules?
- There is a secret cabal of monks with webbed feet who meet on a quarterly basis to appoint a team of physicians. These physicians meet and come up with a criteria of physical deformities and assemble a group of five (5) to ten (10) people with these deformities. This group orders a specific pizza from Domino. Domino delivers the pizza. The pizza is eaten and the group makes up rules, based on the indigestion caused by the pizza. These rules are then submitted to the founders of the game. The founders largely ignore these suggested rules and propose their own. These are usually tabled and voted on. This is done on a "whenever we feel like it" basis.
7) I really, really, really want to play, but my name is Diane. Can I play?
- No. No, no, no, NO. If your name is Diane, you can not be involved.
8) I really, really, really want to quit the game. How can I?
- I suppose you could change your name to Diane. But that probably wouldn't make your personal situation better. Other than that, no way out, princess.

[edit] Reviews

"After reading this article I decided to use The Diane Game as a team building exercise at my company's summer retreat. Everyone had a great time and it really does take a lot of concentration to remember whose name you can use and whose you can't. I think I was Diane three or four times the whole weekend!"
-- Mary-Beth, Richmond, VA

"We adapted these rules to a drinking game during a recent pub crawl. At one place even the waitresses were playing!"
-- David Johnstone, Phoenix, AZ

"This game keeps you on your toes... There is no room for error; if you have a mental lapse, expect to be punished...:
-- Sam G, Glendale, CA

"This game, in concert with Six-Sigma and Lean-Sigma inititiaves has raised our numbers by 2.68% this quarter! A must for every business in THIS economy!"
-- Jim H. Crawford, Montreal, CA
