Defeat the rogue hacker by deploying and maneuvering programes in Spybot, a game of high-stakes espionage

Contents

Summary

In this turn-based strategy game, you play a master hacker trying to solve a series of mysterious cyber-crimes in a futuristic world.

Description

The game is divided into two major sections, an overmap and the mission map.

Netmap

The netmap.

The netmap is where you pick your missions and spend your cash to buy new programs. You start out with a limited number of programs and a limited number of missions to choose from. Some missions are critical, and you need to beat them to advance to the next sector in the game. Other missions are more like side quests, and exist solely for you to earn extra cash on the side, which will certainly help you purchase some of the more powerful programs that are out there.

Mission Map

The mission map.

The mission map is the actual space where the mission takes place, on a grid representing computer memory. The point of most missions is to eliminate all enemy programs.

At the start of a mission, you pick your programs and place them on the map. Programs can move a limited number of spaces per turn, and they can perform one action per turn. All programs start out taking up one grid space, but moving them causes them to extend into memory, effectively giving them more hit points up to a certain maximum. Different programs have different actions: some specialize in attacking other programs (Hack, Tower, Golem, Bug), others boost friendly programs (Medic, Turbo), while still others hinder enemy programs (Clog).

Background & History

This was created as a promotional game for LEGO.

Tips & Tricks

  • Some levels are puzzles that require you to make good use of the Bit-Man program, which turns grid sectors on and off, effectively altering the terrain of the level.
  • Make good use of your support programs. The Turbo program, while making your other programs run faster, also serves as a kind of healing, since moving is one way to heal in this game.
  • To get past an enemy Firewall program, make use of Clog to slow it down, while using Turbo to speed up a Wolf Spider or similar program.

Reviews

  • The Jay is Games review of Spybot has a very good synopsis of the gameplay. The discussion in the comments is an excellent place to find other players' strategies.
