[edit] Description
Each Mystery Case Files game has an episodic storyline where the player is a detective working to solve a mystery. The goal of each game is to collect enough clues to complete each case, solve the mystery and advance to the rank of Master Detective.
The primary game play is similar to a hidden picture game. The player progresses through levels (cases) by visiting a series of locations where they search for objects (clues) imbedded in a richly detailed background. The player may use a limited number of hints to help find the clues before a timer runs out. Failing to find all clues in the allotted time will restart the level with a new set of clues. In addition to collecting all clues, the player must complete periodic mini-games that add challenge and advance the storyline.
[edit] Background & History
The Mystery Case Files series launched in November 2005 with the release of Mystery Case Files: Huntsville.[1] The sequel Mystery Case Files: Prime Suspects released six months later in April 2006,[2] followed by Mystery Case Files: Ravenhearst in December 2006.[3] All games were initially available via download for Windows and later extended to the Mac OS. In July 2006, Big Fish announced an agreement with Activision Value to distribute boxed versions of the Mystery Case Files franchise at retail.[4]
In early 2007 Mystery Case Files games were nominated for fifteen Zeeby awards. Mystery Case Files: Prime Suspects won the award for Best Puzzle Game of 2006.
Given the success of Mystery Case Files, demand for hidden object games has increased and other casual game companies have expanded the genre with similar titles.
