Bookworm is a word-forming puzzle game developed and published by PopCap. It was originally released in 2004 as a free online game with a deluxe downloadable version. The goal of game play is to form words using adjacent letters on a grid, earn points, and progress through levels.

[edit] Description
In Bookworm, players form words by connecting adjacent letters on a grid. As words are formed, they are removed from the grid, the remaining letters collapse to fill the available space, and new letters drop into the empty spaces. Players earn more points by creating longer words or words that use less common letters.
Special tiles of various colors can appear depending on the game level and the length of words being formed. Short words tend to increase the appearance of red tiles that burn through other tiles. If burning tiles reach the bottom of the grid, then game ends. Longer words increase the appearance of positive tiles that increase the number of points earned and slow down the burning tiles. Players may scramble letters by clicking on Lex the Bookworm. However, this will produce an increase of red tiles.
The deluxe downloadable version of Bookworm also includes an Action mode (as opposed to the Classic mode described above). In this mode, the game runs in real-time, periodically adding a new red tile every few seconds.
[edit] Background & History
A variation of the free online version of Bookworm, called Bespelled, was created for Microsoft's MSN Gaming Zone.
Bookworm has received the following awards:[1]
- Puzzle Game of the Year (2003), Computer Gaming World
- Editor’s Choice Award, Computer Gaming World (Five Stars out of five)
- All-Star Team of Online Games, CNN
[edit] Tips & Tricks
- As the player advances through levels, red tiles appear more frequently. Avoid the urge to immediately get rid of the tile. Instead, scan the board and look for opportunities to make the best possible word.
- When two or more red tiles appear, judge which tile(s) should be removed first to minimize the chance of having a red tile with a letter that can't be used.
- If a red tile can't be used immediately, try to use the tile it touches below as this will automatically be burned through.
- If creating a series of shorter, simpler words, red tiles will appear more often and the game will quickly end. The exception to this seems to be when short words are created vertically up or down.
- By manoevering sapphire and diamond tiles to the bottom of the board a buffer is created, giving more time to deal with with burning tiles.
- If having trouble finding a word, click Lex to scramble the letters. To avoid penalities like burning tiles, don't use this feature too frequently.
